Stress Relief in 10 Ways

Stress could cause so much negativity one should ban it from the dictionary. It is one of the leading causes of health deterioration, weight & hair loss, insomnia, low self-esteem, skin problems, anxiety, depression, hypertension and all other tensions and losses. It’s crazy. Once could get stressed by a lot of things: work, school, personal or financial problems, relationships, emotions, love problems, etc. Too much emotional or mental pressure could cause breakdown that could lead to more serious problems.  People are all different & our ways of dealing with stress vary. Some cope through unhealthy means like smoking, drinking, and binge eating which is a no-no. Here are some simple & positive ways on alleviating stress!

  • Meditate or Breathe

Spend 5 minutes of your day meditating. Find a quiet spot, away from any noise, sit up (Indian seat), close your eyes and just breathe deeply. Stay still while you get rid of distractions & unhappy thoughts while you dwell on the feeling of peace this silence brings. You could also recite (loudly or in silence) your favorite mantra which inspires you. This practice is known to ease anxiety and brings peace & positivity.

  • Listening to Feel Good Music

Listening to music could immediately affect a person’s mood. They say that Classical music is the best stress reliever, but preferences vary and certain types of music could only work for some people. Depending on a person’s age or personality, different types of music could relieve stress. Some people may positively respond to classical music, but others may prefer adrenaline pumping ones like Electronic Dance or slow harmonious ones like Indie, Acoustic, Alternative or Jazz. The point is, music effectively calms the nerves and lowers blood pressure.

  • Reaching Out to Family & Friends

Sometimes, the best way to reduce stress is to share your feelings with someone. Not keeping it to yourself lightens your feelings & somehow brings relief. It keeps your connection strong as you draw strength from others and also gives you a fresh perspective.

  • Exercise

When you exercise, your body pumps blood & releases endorphins (known as your body’s happy chemicals!) which consequently bring euphoria, feelings of happiness and instantly improve ones’ mood!  While going to the gym before or after work was proven effective to maintain a positive demeanour all day, simple exercises also brings amazing results. You could do simple exercises such as walking, jogging or simple stretching even while at work!

  • Eating the Right Food

Do not always believe the movies. Do not eat your feelings through a pint of ice cream, packs of chocolates, and a bag of chips or candies. These might give you a temporary high but doing so may result to even bigger problems when the smoke subsides. Choose healthy alternatives! Certain foods are known to decrease stress levels & counter depression. For example, Salmon, which contains omega-3 fatty acids, keeps your adrenaline from spiking and your stress hormones from surging. Others like oatmeal, calms the brain & relieves the body from unwanted stress.

  • Take a Break or a Vacation

A change of view or scenery takes your mind off your things and helps you reboot. This will help you think more clearly and gain a new perspective. But remember, don’t stress yourself over planning the whole thing or it will just defeat its purpose!

  • Get Enough Sleep

People lose sleep because of stress, but loss of sleep is also one of the key causes of stress. Sleep deprivation could make you feel on edge, irritable & physically/emotionally unprepared & unstable. When you don’t get enough sleep, the body releases more cortisol, better known as the stress hormone. So try to achieve the recommended 7-8 hour of sleep per day. You’ll find yourself feeling refreshed & alive every day.
